MAHAKUTA

Mahakuta is loacted near Badami in Bagalkot district. History states Chalukya’s leader Mangalesha had constructed this multifarious temple.”Mangalesha inscription” is protected in Bijapur Musuem. In Mahakoota, including Mahakooteshwara, Mallikarjun, Sangameshwara, Papakanaashini there are around 18 temples.   Temples built are convergence of Shaiva and Dravidian style.

The Vishnu Pushkarani” (The Pond) is one of the main attractions in Mahakoota and taking holy bath gives pleasure.  This Pushkarani (pond) is constructed around 1400 years ago and it has not dried   even in severe drought.  This water was used for agriculture purpose in the form of irrigation. For this reason, Mahakuta is known as “Dakshina Kashi”.   There is “Chikka Mahakoota” situated few meters away from the Mahakuta. Mahakuta is fun spot for students, along with the fun they can learn by taking up study of Chalukya period’s   temples and its sculpture.
